What to Bring on Your Chandleur Trip

Rods
6-1/2' to 7-1/2' medium or medium-light rods

Reels
Good quality casting or spinning reels capable of long casts, with a good drag system.  Shimano, Lews, Abu Garcia, and Daiwa are some of the suggested brands.

Line
Premium monofilament in 10- to 14-pound test.  Green seems to be the best color. Suggested brands include Trilene, Stren, and Silver Thread.

Lures

  • Gold spoons - The Johnson Silver Minnow (weedless) and Sprite are the classic choices at Chandeleur.  Choose sizes from 1/4 to 1/2 ounces.
  • Plastics- Shrimp tails, cocohoe minnows, and stringray grubs in these colors:  smoke, motor oil, pearl, white/red, and chartreuse
  • Jig heads (for plastics) - 1/8 to 1/4 ounce sizes in red, white, or chartreuse.
  • Mansfield Mauler - Orange cork on a wire with two beads at each end.  The large Momma Mauler is the best choice.
  • Topwaters - Zara Spook, Rebel Jumpin' Minnow, Cordell Redfin, and Mirrolure with propellers.  Natural colors such as silver with a black back, gold with a black back, or pearl are best.

Clothes

  • Lightweight cotton or synthetic fabric clothing.  Long and short sleeve, shorts and long pants.  They should be fast drying fabrics.
  • Good quality hats with a green underbill
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Wading boots or old tennis shoes
  • Chest waders (in cold weather)
  • Comfortable slip-on shoes or flip-flops for evenings on the Pelican
  • Raingear and cold weather clothes as required
